The city of Pittsburgh has been working hard to become eco-friendlier, focusing on its green design and technology to minimize its negative impact on the environment. Now, the city is looking to celebrate its success after being recognized by Forbes Magazine as being “in the forefront of green inventiveness and leadership” — and it’s doing so with an Earth Day celebration.
During the Pittsburgh Earth Day celebration, the city will honor the advancements it has made in sustainability, technology, and innovation since it was known as a steel city. It boasts a 408% increase in bike commuting since 2000 — the largest increase in any US city — while also working to increase the number of pedestrian- and bike-friendly spaces. Pittsburgh even boasts many eco-friendly buildings, including two of the first 12 green buildings to be LEED-certified in America.
Throughout the city of Pittsburgh, there will be a variety of Earth Day-related events for you to attend. There will also be exhibitors, pop-up markets, food, music, and plenty of fun for all ages. So far this year, the city has joined forces with sponsors like Carmeuse, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority, and the Port Authority of Allegheny County to help make the event as educational and exciting as possible.
